Mr John Dowsett

John Dowsett specialises in the assessment of individuals and parents within the criminal and family courts.  He has specialised in the assessment of parental risk and is expert in the assessment of adult violence, sexual violence and sexual abuse.  He has co-authored books on personality disorder and specialises in complex mental health and learning difficulties that contribute to harm to children.

He brings over 20 years of experience as a clinical psychologist, working for the NHS as the Head of South London and Maudsley Forensic Psychology Services and most recently as an expert witness.  He has worked with offending populations and specialised in the treatment of sexual offences, severe mental health problems and personality difficulties.  He has co-authored books on managing offenders with personality disorders in the community .

He has worked for the family and criminal courts for over 12 years, specialising in all aspects of forensic risk  including sexual risk, domestic abuse, non-accidental injury and drug and alcohol problems.  In the family courts, he works exclusively with parents to fully understand the difficulties they experience and the risk that they may pose to a child.

John Dowsett  is trained in psychodynamic and intensive short-term dynamic psychotherapy (ISTDP) and currently works with  individuals and parents in private practice in Surrey.
